HISTORY
The Augusta boxing club was founded in 1976 by Tom Moraetes. At the time Mr. Moraetes was working with the Juvenile Court, as a Probation Officer, for the City of Augusta. With support from the Police Department, he started the program out of his personal garage and volunteered his spare time in this endeavor until 1995 when the City of Augusta decided that it was time to bring the Augusta Boxing Club on full time as a part of the Augusta Recreation and Parks Department. In 2011 the Augusta Boxing Club moved from under the city of Augusta and Mr. Moraetes passed the baton to his protégé - Ray "Stingray" Whitfield – who became the new director. The Club is a non-profit organization and is supported by donations from sponsors.
